Most people who walk into this office have put something off
A chipped tooth they stopped noticing. A cleaning that slid from six months to three years. A smile they cover with their hand in photographs. Dr. Kaur has heard all of it, and she has never once made anyone feel small about it.
"People don't avoid the dentist because they're careless," she says. "They avoid it because someone once made them feel judged, or rushed, or kept in the dark about what was about to happen to them. All three are fixable."
She graduated from the New York University College of Dentistry in 2009 and has spent more than fifteen years since in general and cosmetic practice. That span includes leadership roles in private practice, clinical consulting, and quality review — which is a dry way of saying she has spent years looking closely at other dentists' work and asking what separates the good from the merely finished. It shows in her own: careful margins, conservative preparation, and a preference for saving tooth structure over replacing it.
Her range covers most of what a family needs from one practice: checkups and cleanings, fillings, crowns and bridges, implants, root canal treatment, extractions, whitening, bonding, veneers, and clear aligners. She sees children and she sees grandparents, often in the same afternoon.
What patients tend to say afterward is some version of the same thing: she listened, and she explained it in a way I actually understood. Dr. Kaur regards that as the job, not a bonus. A patient who understands the options can choose between them. A patient who doesn't is just consenting.
Romano Dental at 2240 Madison Avenue is now Radiant Smiles
For decades, families in the North End knew this office as Romano Dental. It is now Radiant Smiles Family & Aesthetic Dentistry, led by Dr. Jasmeet Kaur, D.D.S. The building is the same, the address is the same, the phone number — (203) 372-0881 — is the same, and patient records came with the practice. If you were seen here before, you are still a patient here, and there is nothing you need to do except book. What has changed is the technology, the range of treatment available under one roof, and the amount of time somebody spends explaining things to you before they start.
Formerly Romano DentalA small wand, ninety seconds, and no tray of goop
Dr. Kaur is an Invisalign provider and plans treatment digitally, using iTero and TRIOS scanners. In practice that means a small wand takes a few thousand photographs of your teeth in about ninety seconds. There is no tray of impression material, no gagging, and no sitting with your mouth full while it sets.
Patients who remember the old way tend to mention this before they mention anything else, which tells you something about the alternative. It also does something useful: a digital scan can be shown to you on a screen, turned around, and pointed at. It is much easier to agree to treatment you have actually seen.
Dental anxiety is a reason to come, not a reason to stay away
A significant number of people reading this have not seen a dentist in five, ten, or twenty years, and the reason is not laziness. It is dread — often traceable to one bad experience, sometimes in childhood.
Here is how that is handled at Radiant Smiles. Tell us when you call. A first visit can be a conversation and nothing more: no instruments, no treatment, no commitment. When you are ready, nitrous oxide sedation is available, and you stay awake, aware, and able to drive yourself home afterwards. Nothing gets started until you are numb and you have said so.
Nobody here is going to lecture you about the gap. The gap is the past. What we can do something about is the next thirty years.
I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining a filling than two minutes doing one.
Dr. Jasmeet Kaur, D.D.S.A North End practice, on Madison Avenue
Radiant Smiles sits on Madison Avenue in Bridgeport's North End, minutes from the Trumbull line and a short drive from Stratford, Fairfield and Shelton. There is parking at the building — a small thing that stops being small when you are bringing two children and a stroller.
This is a neighbourhood practice, and it behaves like one. You will see the same dentist each visit. She will remember what you told her last time. And if the honest answer to your question is "wait and watch it," that is the answer you will get, even though it is not the one that pays.
